Managua, Nicaragua

Well, here I am back in tropical Central America! Sorry to all those back home enduring the harsh winter, but this will be a nice respite for me. Travel today was smooth and timely. Our connections in Chicago and Houston were uneventful, and we arrived safely in Managua (Nicaragua's capital) this evening. Our big group of 20 along with our guides here in Nicaragua went for a traditional dinner at a great restaurant under the open air after they picked us up from the airport. (I got to have fried plantains again - oh, how I have missed them!) Then, it was off to our hotel for the evening. It's a great, old-fashioned hotel with a unique decor (antique furniture hanging from the walls, pottery, etc). But, they have wifi and air conditioning!

For those of you who don't know why I am down here, I am traveling with a group called "Avon for Nicaragua," and we are going to be starting on the construction of a new school in a rural area outside the city of El Sauce. We will be down here for 11 days working on a project that will give the local children a place to learn. I am excited to be back down here helping to foster the education of our future!

Breakfast is early tomorrow before we head out on a tour of the city, so it's off to bed for me. I look forward to getting to know the people in my group a bit more tomorrow as we spend some time together without the stress and speed of traveling. I am not sure how much access I will have to wifi, but I will post as often as I can!

Buenas noches!
